I think that could have been the best song that India Arie could have made, well one that is so relevant to me. I decided to lock my hair...umm, sometime back in October. My reason being, I got tired of straighten my hair. I was tired of my straight hair hindering me from doing everyday things in life i.e. working out, swimming, "going hard in the club". I was tired of saying "Girl, I can't sweat out my hair." It just started to sound real dumb. I also said back in high school when graduate from college then I would lock it up. My rational back then was I believed I would have grown to a point in which I would be comfortable with my nappy hair. So anyways, I first went natural. I took out my braids and started to wear my hair in its natural state. Let me tell you, that was hard!! My hair was so hard to manage. So, I just got lazy and was like "I'm just locking this sh*t up."
When I starting to lock my hair, I started to notice the different reactions that I was receiving from people. My friends joked around by referring to me as "Sarafina, Afeni, Jada from the Matrix". I had random strangers tell me that I look so "Nubian, natural, ethnic." People will automatically assume that I smoke weed, burnt incense, and Erykah Badu was my favorite artist. In the beginning I thought that it was not so bad because people approached you totally different. However, I begin to get annoyed because I got boxed into the "Afrocentric/Revolutionist/Feminist/ "I only wear shades of brown" Black woman." Not to say that I don't have some of those qualities, but hell I'm not that into Neo-Soul!!
I'M JUST SAYING!!
I so feel you; that song spoke to me as well. For the past two years I've been weaved up! Left the braids behind, and no longer get it flat ironed (thanks for hooking me up Raven!). I've met people who assume I'm shallow or uncomfortable with myself as the reason for me getting weaves. Oh how wrong they were. Initially I'd strike a conversations with them just to prove my intellect, but now I just look at them with disdain, 'cause a response would be giving them too much!
