Okay, so before I could even begin the amount of ridicolous reading that my professor has assigned for the week...I have to take a moment of the beautiful action that I participated in today.
Today, was the first general strike day in Oakland since 1946, and who knows when the last time there was ever a general strike in the US. I was down there from 9:00am-2:00pm and witness thousands of people of all different backgrounds, white to black to chinese, old to young....march in solidarity for a cause. It was such a beautiful site, and I am proud....well should I say, even more proud to be a seedling from Oakland, Ca.
Some people ask..what are they marching for? Well this is my take on the current circumstances that the capitalist systems has put us in. We live in a state of greed!! Were profits come before caring about human kind. We live in a state that has continue to reproduce a "false consciousness" of meritocracy in the US. We, the 99%, are forced feed a myth from grade school that if we work hard then we would succeed. No one tells us in elementary, that the structure of the capitalist system is to maintain a gap between the rich and the poor.
Just a moment of education (especially to all the "nay-sayers" who cannot understand why are people so fruriated): Wells Fargo act as the bank depository for the city of Oakland. That means that the City banks at Wells Fargo. Wells Fargo has foreclosed on hundreds of homes in Oakland, and now act as "homeowners." This corporate "homeowner" owes the city MILLIONS of dollars in property taxes. What is the city doing? NOTHING!! They are not being held accountable...consider this? If they city collect the property taxes from the Wells Fargo "homeowner" then that $$$ would go back into the general fund and pay for: the clean up of illegal dumping, new roads, job placement programs, etc.
Another tidbit of education: During the Reagan era, we had the surge of the neoliberal politics. This advocated for limited government and more corporate freedom. We begin to see devolution of funds from the federal government to the states and the cities. The states and the cities became dependent on coporations for funds because they no longer received the funding from the federal goverment. In order to get these funds, loopholes were created in order to build good relationships that would attract business. So the cities could no longer operate on behalf of its residents; but in the interest of big business.
I just wanted to take sometime and reflect on whats going on. Also give my opinion to whats happening currently in the movement. This is historical, and I appreciate Oakland for allowing me to partake!!
In the spirit of today: "OLE OLE OLE, SI SE PUEDE"
I'm Just Saying!!
